You will need: Paper and markers and something to project and play the commercials and its sound.
Prep: You will need to get a number of commercials and cut out any parts that indicate what is being advertised; such as branding and tag lines.
How to Play:
Players watch each commercial and try to work out what is being advertised. To record their answers they can use paper and markers or whisper into the ear of the leader. You can use any kind of commercial including food, clothing, house ware, perfume or car commercials depending on the theme you are trying to communicate. The player or team with the most correct answers is the winning person or team.
CONTENTMENT: The ‘Commercial Guess’ game makes us think about what it means to be content. Whenever we see a commercial it can be tempting to want what is being advertised and forget what it means to be content with what we already have. (Philippians 4:11-12, Hebrews 13:5, 1 Timothy 6:6-8)
ENTERTAINMENT: We all love to be entertained. Did you think the commercials we used in the ‘Commercial Guess’ game were entertaining?
GREED: When we play the ‘Commercial Guess’ game we can begin to think of all the commercials we’ve watched and how many things we’ve wanted as a result. When we have that kind of desire for things we don’t need we can become greedy. (Proverbs 28:25)
HUNGER: Some of the food commercials in the ‘Commercial Guess’ game made me feel hungry! Did they make you feel hungry too? There are lots of poor people in the world who feel real hunger every day. (Psalm 22:26, Matthew 5:6)
LUST: When we watch some of the commercials in the ‘Commercial Guess’ game we can end up wanting the things that are advertised. That’s not a bad thing, but the same kind of wanting of other people’s things is called lust. And the bible says that’s not a good thing. (1 John 2:16, Psalm 119:37)
THIRST: Wow the drink commercials in that ‘Commercial Guess’ game have made me really thirsty! Did you know that we can be thirsty spiritually too – we can be thirsty for more of God! (Psalm 42:1-2)
