BIG IDEA: JESUS TRANSFORMS MY ATTITUDE
AIM: TO TEACH KIDS THAT GOD WANTS TO TRANSFORM YOU INTO PEOPLE THAT CARE FOR OTHERS LIKE THEY ARE YOUR FAMILY.
1. ‘Help Me Be Your Hands Lord Jesus’ by Douggie Doug
2. ‘Totally Transformed’ by Jana Alayra
- Know Your Sibling? Have two sets of siblings answer questions about each other whilst one of the siblings is out of the room. Which pair of siblings got the most answers correct?
- Spot the Siblings. Put pictures of different siblings around the room (such as Brother Bear characters, Elsa and Anna from Frozen and other Disney channel characters). Ask the children to run around the room grabbing the pictures one at a time and then matching them to make a pair. Who can find the siblings the fastest?
BIG VERSE: He cares for you. 1 Peter 5:7.
SET the Scene:
While Peter is in Prison the church pray for him – all his friends and family pray that he will soon be released. They are sad because they love him just as if he were family.
SPOT the Simple Meaning:
1. GOD WANTS US TO CARE FOR OTHERS
You will need accessibility to this video of a brother and sister that care deeply for each other.
Say: Wow! Did you see that?! Isn’t that great that a brother would care for his sister like that?! That’s how people should be loved and treated! The brother didn’t mind looking after and caring for his sister because he loved and cared for her! God wants us to care for others too! He wants us to have a love for other people because He loves them and cares about them! The brother was crying for his sister because that’s how much he loved his sister! That’s how God wants us to care for others too – with all our heart!
2. WE SHOULD CARE FOR OTHERS LIKE THEY ARE PART OF OUR FAMILY
(Pose the question: What do you do for your brothers and sisters?)
Say: What if you don’t have a best friend or a brother? I mean, that last video just showed us how to look after your brother or sister. Wait a minute… we said this morning that everyone who follows Jesus is part of our family! So maybe we should treat other Christians like they are our brothers and sisters?! What kinds of things do you do for your brothers and sisters? Beat them up, argue, get annoyed with each other, wind each other up? Well, I don’t think that’s how God wants us to care for others… hmm… what other ways should we treat our brothers and sisters? (get real suggestions and write them down)
So that’s how God wants us to treat our Christian brothers and sisters – like family! Family we love and care about! That doesn’t mean that we give them everything, but that we do as the church did for Peter – we pray, because we love and care for them.
3. THEY COULD BE PART OF OUR FAMILY
2 scenarios. 1) two kids bump into each other. They have a fight then realise they are both Christians. a third person watching says “I’m glad I’m not part of your family if that’s what you treat each other like!” 2) two kids bump into each other. They forgive each other and get chatting and realize they are both Christians – they invite their friend to come to a kids club with them the following week.
Say: Did you see how those two situations were completely different. When they stopped fighting and cared for each other, forgave each other and talked to one another they discovered that they were both Christians. In the first situation the third person didn’t want to know or be a part of their family because they weren’t being very friendly – it wasn’t very attractive. Likewise if people see us treating each other badly in church they won’t want to become a Christian! They won’t want to be a part of God’s family!
The second situation shows us that sometimes we don’t know who is a Christian. There maybe people at school that are following Jesus and we don’t even know it! So God wants us to treat everyone like they are our family! Now, that doesn’t mean that we go off with anyone or do what others say just because they ask us to, especially if they are strangers, but it means treating everyone with love and kindness because they could be part of our family! God’s family!
As Luke 6:31 says,
Do for other people what you want them to do for you.
That is what we are called to do. Let’s be people that treat other people like family!
