BIG IDEA: GOD PROVIDES US WITH FAMILIES

SONG IDEAS:

1. ‘Help Me Be Your Hands Lord Jesus’ by Douggie Doug

2. ‘Totally Transformed’ by Jana Alayra

GAME IDEA:

  1. Team Tag. Choose two siblings to work together to try and tap all the children on the shoulder as the children run away. Once a child is tagged they are out of the game.

BIG VERSE: God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family – Ephesians 1:5.

SET the Scene:

Read Matthew 8:14-15 or create a skit based on the passage.

VIDEO IDEAS:

  1. ‘Jesus Healed Peter’s Mother in Law’

SPOT the Simple Meaning:

1. OBJECT LESSON: GOD PROVIDES US WITH FAMILIES. HE LOVES FAMILIES!

You will need pictures of famous families from the Disney channel or programs you know that your children watch.

Say: Simon Peter’s mother in law was ill. His mother in law was his wife’s mum. So somebody his wife really loved was very ill. Someone in Simon’s family was ill – and Jesus healed her! That’s really cool isn’t it?! You know, Jesus cared about Simon Peter’s mother in law. He cared about Simon’s family. He cares about our families too! God cares about families because He gave us them! Families are a gift from God! There are many different types of families; some have mums and dads, some just have a mum or just a dad, some have grandparents and some don’t, some only have grandparents. Some families are foster families too. Whatever family we find ourselves in we should remember that God has given us a family and He loves them. He wants us to love them too!

2. OBJECT LESSON: WE ARE PART OF GOD’S FAMILY

You will need accessibility to this video.

Say: But what about those children that don’t have a family? What if you don’t feel your family is a very good one? Maybe it feels broken or like it’s falling apart. Well you know, the reason why God loves families is because He is the Father of the biggest family on earth. The family of God! Did you know that if you believe in Jesus and have accepted him as your Lord and Savior then you have become part of God’s family! You become a child of God – one of God’s children! Every other Christian becomes your brothers and sisters in God and God becomes your Father! How cool is that! So if you ever feel like you don’t have a family, remember that in Jesus you have family all over the world! That’s like having thousands of big brothers and sisters and little brothers and sisters too! WOW!

3. OBJECT LESSON: FAMILIES HAVE PROBLEMS BUT WE CAN ASK JESUS TO HELP US WITH OUR PROBLEMS

You will need to prepare by watching and learning The Tie trick.

Say: You know, every family has to go through problems. Simon Peter’s mother in law being ill was a big problem. When families have problems they have to stick close together! I have a problem right now, I want to tie this tie. Can I have a volunteer to do it for me?! Now the only rule is that you can’t let go of the ends of the tie whilst you tie it in a knot. Got it? Ok go. (let them try) It’s pretty much impossible isn’t it?! And that’s like some of our problems in our families – maybe someone gets sick or runs out of money, or people are fighting and getting upset. Well, at those times we need someone to help – someone who knows the answer and can do the impossible! (Another leader comes forward and says they have the answer. What you must do is cross your arms first and then pick up the tie to make the knot.) Ask the leader to help you to do it. (They fold your arms and help you.) Did you know that just like (the leader) helped me to tie my tie we can ask Jesus to help solve the problems in our families. In our church family or in our family at home.

We can pray and ask him to get involved. It may not happen straight away, but He can do it. But if He doesn’t fix the problem the way we thought He might then He will always be with us even when the problems are there.

RESPONSE: God thank you for our families. Help us to love our families and to know and love your family too!

CRAFT IDEA: BALLOON PEOPLE

You will need a balloon for each child, and a few spares, plus some colored different types of paper and card.

Children should blow up their balloons and then decorate them with a face using permanent markers or Sharpies. Then they can tape yarn to the balloon for the hair. You could even attach the balloon to a plastic balloon stick.
