SPOT the Simple Meaning:

1. OBJECT LESSON: THANKFUL PEOPLE ARE JOYFUL

Give each child a chocolate bar or alike. See who says thankyou.

It’s great to hear so many of you say thankyou for your treat. Can you believe that when the lepers were healed only one went back to tell Jesus. He must have gone back to Jesus with a big smile on his face for all Jesus had done for him! That’s becuase it’s very difficult to say thankyou for something in a sad voice or looking depressed. If you are truly thankful for something you will be very joyful. Now remember, joy is different to happiness, happiness is only by your situation… but we can have joy even when everything is going badly.

That means if we are having a really rough time and everything is going wrong- if we are still thankful then we can be full of God’s joy! Why? Because we are not thinking about the bad situation or thinking about what we don’t have but we are thinking about what God has already done for us. That brings us lots of joy! What has God done for you today?

2. OBJECT LESSON: THANKFUL PEOPLE HONOR/SHOW RESPECT TO GOD

[clip from Mulan – the people are thankful that she did the right thing and that she fought for them]

Mulan was honoured/shown respect in front of everyone in China. The Consulate was grateful for all that she had done and thanked her in front of everyone – he wasn’t embarrassed at all because he was so thankful. God absolutely loves it when we are thankful! That’s because he has given so much and so often nobody remembers to thank Him! How would you feel if nobody ever thanked you for anything? Exactly. It wouldn’t be very nice would it? Well to show honour means to show deep respect. Just like we were saying the other day. It means remembering what someone has done for you. Do you remember what God has done? What has He done (get feedback). When we remember and thank God for what He has done we are showing everyone that it is important.

When the leper came running back to Jesus he honoured God because he showed everyone that what Jesus had done mattered. Has what Jesus has done for you mattered? Has it made a difference to your life? Then honour him in front of others by talking about it and thanking him for it!

3. OBJECT LESSON: THANKFUL PEOPLE CAN’T KEEP QUIET

(clip from Xfactor or Britains Got Talent where thanking the judges)

Did you see how that contestant couldn’t stop hugging and thanking the judges?! That’s because they were so grateful that they put them through to the next round. It’s funny but thankful people cannot keep quiet – they have to tell the person that they are so thankful for what they have done becuase of the difference it has made to their lives!

Are you thankful to God when he has done things for you? He has done many many amazing things already – like giving you a home, a family, friends, clothes to wear, water to drink, bodies that work, there are so many things to be thankful to God for!!! When did you last tell him how thankful you were for all He has done? What about your parents? Have you told them how thankful you are for all the meals they cook, the times they work so you have a house to live in? Thankful people cannot keep quiet they have to tell everyone what has been done for them and they have to thank the person for what they have done. So how thankful are you? Have you been keeping quiet for too long? I want to be the kind of person who is thankful to God and runs back to tell him – just like the one leper. I don’t want to be like the other 9 who never thanked him. Do you?

RESPONSE: Praise Songs. Thank you God for this amazing week!
