BIG VERSE: People don’t light a lamp and put it under a basket but on a lampstand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. Matthew 5:15.
SET the Scene:
Drama/Video: Max 7 video “The Talents”
SPOT the Simple Meaning:
1. OBJECT LESSON: GOD OWNS EVERYTHING
You will need big signs that say ‘GOD’S PROPERTY’ and stick them to everything you see.
The Master in that story started off with money – he owned it all – and he gave some of it to the servants to look after until he returned. That is very similar to God and us. (start putting the signs on everything) Don’t mind me, I’m just reminding myself who owns everything. Can you tell me what it says? Yes, that’s right. God! God owns absolutely everything! He created it all – the trees, the sun, the moon and stars, the animals. He even owns things you and I have made. He owns this tent/room, He owns our sound system, He owns all the prizes and sweets. God owns absolutely EVERYTHING! Why? Because even though we may have bought them from a shop, God made people, He made all the materials that these things have been made from. People can’t make something out of nothing. So we have to take something of God’s (something natural) to make something anyway! God made the whole Universe!
2. EVERYTHING YOU HAVE BEEN GIVEN IS FROM GOD
Add new signs that say ‘ON LOAN TO HOLLYBUSH KIDS’
So the parable showed us that God owns everything, but it also showed us that He gave some of what He owned to his servants; His people – you and me if we follow Jesus! So that means everything that we have is on loan from God; our bodies, our homes, our talents and abilities, our toys, our money, everything! Let’s remind ourselves of that (start slapping new signs on everything you see). Hmm… so if that means everything is on loan to us; we only have it for a short time while we are living. That means that God is one day going to ask us what we did with it all, just like the parable showed!
3. OBJECT LESSON: YOU CAN USE WHAT YOU HAVE FOR GOD
You will need accessibility to the clip of Mike doing his comedy for the kid (Monsters Inc clip) Mini Show and Tell- let the children come up and show their own talents and tell how they want to use it for God!
I love Monsters Inc! This bit at the end is a brilliant clip because it shows us that everyone has talents – things they are good at! Sulley was good at scaring, but Mike was good at comedy and making people laugh! What are you good at? What talents has God given you while you’re on this earth?
What are the things that He has given you that you can use for Him? In the parable the Master was happy with both the servants that DID something with the money he gave them. He was only unhappy with the servant that was scared of the Master and hid the money because he didn’t know who the Master was. He didn’t realise the Master was loving and would reward the servant. So he decided to do nothing. He hid what God had given him. You know, God wants us to use what we have for Him! That means doing good things with what He has given us. (Get kids to think of their talents and either show or tell how they will use it for God).
RESPONSE: God help me to use what I have for you! [Draw picture of doing something for God]
