GAME IDEAS:
- Hello Neighbour. (UK spelling) (regular/widescreen) (US Spelling) (regular/widescreen) Hide a set of keys around the room or area. Children can then look for the keys and report to the leader once they are found. The winner is the child to find them first.
- Kickball. (regular/widescreen) Split the group into two teams. Like baseball, the pitcher stands in the middle with members of the same team on bases (hula hoops) around the area. However, in this version the pitcher kicks the ball and the person aiming to get around the bases also kicks the ball back. The child must try and get around all the bases after kicking the ball. If they manage to get around all the bases, they win a point for their team.
- Screaming Relay. (regular/widescreen) Children start off on one side of the room and must run to the other end screaming. (Use face masks if needed) They must run back and forth until their breath runs out. The child that lasts the longest is the winner.
BIG VERSE: A thief comes to steal and kill and destroy. But I came to give life—life in all its fullness. John 10:10.

SET the Scene:
Read Luke 10:38-42.
It was such a special day for Mary and Martha that Jesus was coming to their home. Their teacher – rabbi – was coming to visit them. They must have wanted him to feel welcome and at home. Both sisters, Mary and Martha loved Jesus and wanted to show him that they cared.
REVIEW QUESTIONS:
- Who invited Jesus to their home?
- What did Martha do once Jesus was there?
- What did Mary do?
- Who did Jesus say did the better thing?
SPOT the Simple Meaning:
1) I CAN WELCOME JESUS INTO MY HOME
Show the words for ‘welcome’ in lots of different languages via the PowerPoint images (regular/widescreen).
Say: Just like Mary and Martha welcomed Jesus into their home, we can welcome Him into ours too. Perhaps the grown ups in our home follow Jesus but maybe they do not. We can still welcome Him in. That simply means to ask Jesus to help you live for Him in your home and asking Him to make a difference in your home life.
People around the world have different ways of welcoming others. These are some of the ways that they say the word ‘Welcome’:
Mongolians welcome guests into their homes by gifting the person with a piece of cotton or silk called hada. In Kenya the Maasai tribe dances the adamu, this is the jumping dance of warriors. In Tibet, they welcome people by putting out their tongues and placing their hands on their chest.
There are lots of ways to welcome Jesus into our homes. The main thing is that we ask Him. We ask Him to come into our home life and help us and our families love one another.
2) I CAN LISTEN TO JESUS IN MY HOME
Things that you listen to in the home: music, movies, TV programs, mum, dad.
Say: We can welcome Jesus by listening to Him. That’s what Mary did. When Jesus came to visit she was sat at his feet listening to everything that He had to say. She didn’t want to miss a thing!
Do you spend time at home listening to Jesus? Perhaps when you wake up or before you go to bed, it could be when you brush your teeth or when you’re eating a meal. We can talk to and listen to Jesus throughout our day whilst in our homes. We can even listen to Jesus together as a family.
We listen to Jesus by reading the Bible and asking Him if He has anything to tell us. We can read the Bible alone or together. We can pray alone or together. We can even listen to worship music or watch online church or kids church alone or together.
Doing these things help us to listen out for what God might want to speak to us. It shows Him that we are trying to hear what He wants to say. Have you been listening to Him lately?
3) I CAN AVOID DISTRACTION AT HOME
When I wake up, when I eat, and when I go to bed.(regular/widescreen)
Say: Martha wanted to do her best for Jesus. She was busy doing things around the home, hoping to give Jesus the best time during his visit. She became upset when Mary wasn’t helping and even told Jesus that Mary should have been helping. Martha managed to get so distracting working at things for Jesus that she didn’t get to spend time with Jesus. She was stressed out and fed up.
Sometimes we can try and do too many things. Perhaps we are playing with toys whilst watching TV or playing games on our tablet whilst trying to tidy our room. It is easy to get distracted with so many different things in our homes. Yet Jesus wants us to stop and spend time with Him. That means laying down certain things to make room for Him. It may mean picking up the pens or paints and drawing what He is speaking to us such as a Bible verse or story. We can listen and spend time with Jesus in lots of fun ways. Yet first we have to decide to lay aside anything that distracts us from thinking about Him.
Mary gave her full attention to Jesus. Does Jesus get your full attention?
SEARCH the Scriptures:
There’s one verse of the Bible that really helps us to think about spending time with Jesus at home. Read Matthew 6:6 together:
“But when you pray, go into your inner room, shut your door, and pray to your Father, who is unseen. And your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”
Discuss what it means to do this:
- How often should/can/do we want to do this?
- What are the benefits of doing this?
- What will it cost us to do this?
- What will it cost us not to do this?
SENSE How You Feel:
Encourage the children to do one of the activities below as they think about their answer to this question:
How would it feel to be Mary sitting at Jesus’ feet?
- Color or Fill in the booklet for 5-7s and 8-11s.
- Sensory: Have some peaceful music playing in music devices that children can listen to with headphones quietly to themselves.
- Build: your home out of Lego or building blocks.
- Mould: your home out of playdough or clay.
- Make a card house using the My House Template Simply print out the template and fold on the dotted lines and glue together.
SEEK God:
Encourage children to lie down and close their eyes. Invite them to pray a simple prayer inviting Jesus into their lives and asking for His help so that they won’t be distracted away from Him.
Pray:
Father God, please help me to put away anything that distracts me and to listen to You. I want to spend time with You today. I want to know You more. Please come into my life and help me to live more like You each day. Amen.
