- Find a Friend. (regular/widescreen) Icebreaker game. The leader shouts out a category such as ‘food’ or ‘color’ and the children must find a friend that has the same favourite thing as themselves.
- Fishing For Friends. (regular/widescreen) Print off the Fishing for Friends printable and laminate them. Fill a tub of water or paddling pool for each team. Have the children use their feet to fish out the laminated friends. SPOT the Simple Meaning:
1) JESUS IS THE GREATEST FRIEND Friend or Foe? (regular/widescreen) Use the images to ask the children, if these toys were their characters in real life, would they want to be their friend? What kind of friend would the character be? For older children, use the zoomed in pictures for them to try and guess the characters first.

Say: There is no better friend than Jesus! He is the friend that always gives, always loves and always cares. Sometimes even our bestest friends can let us down, do wrong or think about themselves first. Yet Jesus never does.
Judas was the friend that turned against Jesus. If we’re honest, his actions were like those of an enemy or foe. Yet Jesus shows us what a true friend is. He showed the disciples that he cared about them.
Jesus is the greatest friend because He is always there for us, no matter what. He always puts His friends before His own needs and cares for them. No matter what we are going through or where we are, we can always turn to Jesus. We can always talk to Him. He will always listen and always be there for us. We can always repent (admit and turn away from the things we have done) and He will forgive us. That’s because He is the greatest friend.
2) JESUS COMMITS TO HIS FRIENDS AS HIS FRIEND BETRAYS HIM
Hold up a cup of juice and a big loaf of bread as you speak about the commitment Jesus made.
Say: Corinthians tells us that on the same night Jesus was betrayed (1 Corinthians 11) he sat down and broke bread and ate wine with his friends. Jesus made a commitment, a promise, an agreement with his friends that night. He said he would die and that they were to remember him after his death.
Jesus was about to die for all humankind. He was about to take our place and die instead of us. He knew that his friend Judas would turn against him – betray him – for money. Yet he is the greatest friend because he chose not to let this stop him from helping everyone else. Jesus could have decided that people were not worth his time. They just turned against him – they weren’t worth saving!
Yet Jesus is the greatest friend. Even though people were betraying him, turning against him, and soon to kill him, he still lovedthem. He still loves us when we do wrong. He is the greatest friend. A friend who forgives. A friend that loves. A friend who commits to helping others, no matter the cost.
2) JESUS IS THE GREATEST FRIEND – EVEN WHEN WE TURN AGAINST HIM
Befriend or Not? (regular/widescreen) Hold the images of the heroes and villains up again. Invite the children to tell you if they would befriend the character or not. For older children you could use celebrities that they would recognise. You could also share a testimony of someone that you know that was against Jesus, that now has found a friend in him.
Say: Judas turned against Jesus. The Bible tells us (1 Corinthians 11) on the same night that Jesus made an agreement with all of humanity one of his closest friends turned their back on him. Even worse – they handed him over to his enemies – to those that would kill him. Yet Jesus still made an agreement to die for people. Even though people would kill him.
Perhaps you are not a friend of Jesus yet. You can become his friend today, no matter how you have treated him. That’s what Judas never understood. We have been given an opportunity to know God and to be forgiven by accepting Jesus as our God and choosing to follow him. Will you be his friend today?
