SET the Scene:

Washing feet was not a new thing in Jesus’ time. There are many Old Testament references to feet washing. (Genesis 18:4; 19:2; 24:32; 43:24; Judges 19:21; 1 Samuel 25:41; 2 Samuel 11:8; Song of Solomon 5:3; Psalms 58:10) In ordinary households guests would wash their own feet as they walked in and the host would provide the water. However, in richer houses, a servant or slave would wash your feet as you entered. This was considered the lowliest of jobs.

Say: By washing his disciples feet Jesus showed us what it meant to serve others. There are many people that serve as part of their job. Can you work out what these might be? (show examples)
A servant is someone that does things for other people that help people. Jesus showed us what it means to be a servant when he bent down and washed his friends feet. He was showing them what it meant to help and to do something for someone else. Something that you may never get a reward for doing.
Jesus was the greatest servant because he was never paid to do any of the good things he did for others. He did them because he loved people and he wanted to show them how important they were to Him and to God.
2) A SERVANT THINKS OF OTHERS MORE THAN THEMSELVES
How often do you think of others? For older kids get them to fill out the Pie Chart US Version or the UK Version. and fill in how much they think about different people or things. You could encourage them to include parents, grandparents, friends (individually or collectively), teachers etc
For both younger and older children you could use scenarios where you might be tempted to think of yourself before others:
- a) There are two slices of cake left. One is for you and one is for your brother. Do you give him the smaller or bigger piece? Why?
- b) The house is a mess and the playroom is even messier. Your little sister made the mess. Do you leave it for someone else to clean or tidy it yourself? Why?
- c) The teacher is looking for someone to befriend the new kid on their first day. Do you offer to help? Why or why not?
Say: When Jesus showed us how to serve others he was showing his followers how to put other people first. You see, a servant thinks of other people more than they think of themselves.
Jesus knew that he was about to be killed. This would be his greatest act of service to humankind. He served people by doing something that nobody else could ever do. He would die for the sins of everyone in the world.
Jesus never thought about what he wanted or what he preferred to do. He always did and does what is best for others and what his Father wants. This all makes Jesus the greatest servant.

Laminate the Bible verses found here. Float the bible verses in a tub of water, only moments before playing this game, to make sure they don’t sink. Encourage kids to take turns to try and fish out the bible verses using their toes.
